Reid Hoffman is what happens when a philosophy student who once planned to become an academic decides instead to become one of Silicon Valley’s most connected operators, investors, and public intellectuals. He was part of the PayPal founding team — the so-called “PayPal Mafia” that also produced Peter Thiel and Elon Musk — before co-founding LinkedIn in 2003 and selling it to Microsoft for $26.2 billion in 2016. That deal put him on Microsoft’s board of directors, where he sat for nearly a decade, and made him one of the rare people with a seat inside the company that bankrolled the modern AI boom.

For developers, Hoffman matters less as an engineer and more as a capital-and-narrative node in the AI ecosystem. As a partner at Greylock, he has backed generational companies, and he was a founding investor in OpenAI — meaning his fingerprints are on both the infrastructure and the funding of today’s frontier models. In 2022 he co-founded Inflection AI with Mustafa Suleyman, the DeepMind co-founder; the company built the Pi chatbot before Microsoft essentially absorbed its team and talent in a controversial 2024 “acqui-hire” that installed Suleyman as CEO of Microsoft AI. Hoffman’s proximity to that deal — as both an Inflection co-founder and a Microsoft director — is a good illustration of how few degrees of separation exist at the top of this industry.

Hoffman’s second act is as AI’s most relentlessly optimistic public intellectual. In January 2025 he published Superagency, arguing that AI is fundamentally a human-empowerment technology — that giving millions of people new capabilities at once (“superagency”) is a net good, and that the sensible posture is “smart risk-taking” rather than doom. He co-hosts the Possible podcast with Aria Finger and the long-running Masters of Scale, and he has increasingly experimented with AI itself as a medium — writing a book with GPT-4 and even deploying a “digital twin” to give an AI-generated keynote. Whether you find his techno-optimism clarifying or convenient, it’s one of the most influential frames shaping how Washington and boardrooms talk about AI.

Now he is moving from investor to builder again. In early 2025 he co-founded Manas AI with oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee, an AI drug-discovery startup targeting aggressive cancers, running on Microsoft’s Azure. In June 2026 he announced he would not seek re-election to Microsoft’s board — after nearly a decade — to focus on Manas in “founder mode.” For anyone learning AI today, Hoffman is worth studying not for his code but for how he thinks about deploying it: fast, optimistically, and with an eye on both the returns and the story.

Jeffrey Epstein association. Hoffman had documented contacts with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including visits to Epstein’s private island, in the context of fundraising for MIT’s Media Lab. He has publicly apologized for the association; no allegations of wrongdoing have been made against him. The connection resurfaced in 2026 when Democratic candidates who had accepted his political donations faced criticism over it.

Political megadonor status. As one of the largest Democratic donors in the country, Hoffman is a lightning rod in partisan debates — critics on the right frame his AI advocacy and philanthropy as politically motivated, while some on the left question the influence of billionaire money in politics. It’s worth noting mainly because his political footprint is inseparable from how his AI-governance views are received in Washington.

The Inflection AI “acqui-hire.” Microsoft’s March 2024 move to hire away most of Inflection’s staff and license its technology for a reported ~$650 million drew scrutiny as a structure that captured a startup’s value while sidestepping a formal acquisition and antitrust review.
