Matt Pocock took an unusual road into software: he was a professional voice coach before he ever wrote TypeScript for a living. That background shows in everything he makes — he is arguably the best pure explainer working in developer education today. He built his reputation on the XState core team at Stately, then as a developer advocate at Vercel working on Turborepo, before going independent to create Total TypeScript — the course that became the de facto industry standard for learning TypeScript seriously, backed by a YouTube channel of roughly 300,000 subscribers whose 60-second “TypeScript tips” taught a generation of developers advanced generics.

That history matters because of what he did next. Pocock pivoted full-time into AI engineering education with AI Hero, starting with a free 16-lesson tutorial on Vercel’s AI SDK and growing into self-paced courses on building production AI systems in TypeScript — agents, streaming, structured outputs, tool calling, and evals. I found no notable public controversies — reception of his skills repo included ordinary technical criticism (early TypeScript/GitHub-centric assumptions, since addressed), which doesn’t rise to a controversy — so that section is omitted per the instructions.
