Profile

Marques Brownlee — MKBHD — is the most influential consumer-tech reviewer on the planet, and that reach is exactly why he matters to anyone building with AI. What started in 2008 as a teenager filming laptop unboxings from his New Jersey bedroom is now a ~20-million-subscriber operation (roughly 25 million across his channels), a production studio, and a genuine kingmaker in gadget launches. When Brownlee reviews something, mainstream consumers form their opinion of it. For a developer shipping AI into a physical product, he is the arbiter standing between your demo reel and how millions of normal people will actually judge the thing.

Brownlee’s real value to the AI community is that he is the industry’s most credible reality check on the gap between AI promises and AI products. In 2024 he became the face of that reckoning: his review of the Humane AI Pin — titled “The Worst Product I’ve Ever Reviewed… For Now” — called the device “bad at almost everything it does, basically all the time,” and days later he dismissed the Rabbit R1 as “barely reviewable.” His broader indictment stuck harder than either verdict: he skewered the pattern of “delivering barely finished products to win a ‘race’ and then continuing to build them after charging full price.” That is the single most useful sentence a builder shipping an AI feature can internalize — and it came from a reviewer, not a researcher.

Beyond the main channel, Brownlee co-hosts the weekly Waveform podcast (now under the Vox Media Podcast Network), and in February 2024 he took his first-ever board seat as Chief Creative Partner and equity investor at accessories maker Ridge — a notable move from reviewing hardware to helping design it. He’s also an active tech investor, with stakes in the smart-webcam maker Opal and podcast-recording platform Riverside.fm. In 2025, TIME named him to its inaugural TIME100 Creators list.

For developers, the lesson of Brownlee’s career is about the last mile of AI. Models and benchmarks are one thing; whether a product feels fast, honest, and finished in the hand of a non-technical user is another, and Brownlee is the loudest voice grading that final exam. His scrutiny of the 2024 AI-hardware wave arguably reset expectations across the whole category — a reminder that no amount of model capability survives a laggy, wrong, overheating consumer experience.

Controversies

The Panels app (2024–2025). In September 2024, Brownlee launched Panels, a curated wallpaper app, and drew immediate backlash over an aggressive $11.99/month (or $49.99/year) subscription, intrusive ad-gated downloads, and a long list of data-tracking permissions — an especially awkward look for a creator whose brand is built on consumer advocacy. His team walked back the pricing (eventually to about $2/month) and clarified the AI-generated art, but the app never recovered. In December 2025 he announced Panels would shut down on December 31, admitting “we made mistakes in making our first app,” and pledged to open-source the code on GitHub under Apache 2.0 in January 2026 and refund active annual subscribers. The “power to kill a product” debate. Brownlee’s blunt AI-hardware reviews reignited a recurring argument about whether one reviewer’s verdict can sink a startup. After the Humane AI Pin takedown, some founders and commentators argued such influence is dangerous; others — including creator MoistCr1TiKaL — publicly defended him, noting that honestly informing buyers is the whole point of a review. Brownlee’s own position has been consistent: the responsibility lies with companies shipping unfinished products at full price, not with the reviewer who says so. Coverage: Dexerto.
