In September 2024, Brownlee launched Panels, a curated wallpaper app, and drew immediate backlash over an aggressive $11.99/month (or $49.99/year) subscription, intrusive ad-gated downloads, and a long list of data-tracking permissions — an especially awkward look for a creator whose brand is built on consumer advocacy. His team walked back the pricing (eventually to about $2/month) and clarified the AI-generated art, but the app never recovered.
